ISAIAH 12 THANKSGIVING SONG

                                                                             Isaiah 12

A Thanksgiving Hymn

The Lord Is My Strength and My Song

Isa 12:1  And in that day thou shalt say, O LORD, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me.

In that day, when the remnant shall return to the Lord and experience peace and harmony under His reign, they will sing a song of thanksgiving, praising God for their redemption. The redeemed acknowledge that they have no claim to His mercy, which lays the foundation for unceasing praise. They rejoice because the Lord’s anger is turned away, bringing them comfort, peace with God, and hope of His glory.

Isa 12:2  Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

Some of the words and phrases of this song appear to echo Miriam’s song of praise to God after the overthrow of Pharaoh’s armies at the Red Sea. Having overcome trials and dangers by the might of the Lord, the redeemed gratefully acknowledge His faithfulness. They find their strength in Yahweh alone, trusting in Him without fear. He is not only their Saviour but also their salvation, in whom they are safe and secure. Such people enjoy a holy calm and serenity of mind, and the Lord becomes both their strength and their song.

Isa 12:3  Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.

God is the fountain of every good thing for His people, and they shall draw from Him with great pleasure and satisfaction. God’s promises, revealed and ratified to us, are wells of salvation, and it is our duty by faith to draw from them — enjoying the benefits and comforts treasured up within. It is the will of God that we rejoice before Him and find our delight in Him.

Isa 12:4  And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted.

Believers shall stir themselves up to praise God and encourage one another to do the same. We honour God by calling upon His name in prayer — asking for fresh mercies while thankfully acknowledging those already received. We proclaim His name, making known His wonderful works in our lives, so that others too may be drawn into fellowship with Him, and His name glorified.

Isa 12:5  Sing unto the LORD; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth.

The Lord is great, and He has done great and marvellous things. It is fitting, therefore, to sing His praises and let the whole earth know how glorious and mighty our God is.

Isa 12:6  Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

The Lord has done wondrous things for His people by dwelling among them, and therefore they are encouraged to shout aloud with joy, lifting up thankful praises in honour of His name.
